Pokhara International Airport (IATA: PKR) is Nepal’s third international airport and a major new gateway to the Himalayas and the Annapurna region, located in Chhinne Danda, Pokhara, about 200 km west of Kathmandu. Officially opened on 1 January 2023, the airport was built at a cost of about $216 million USD, largely financed through a Chinese EXIM Bank loan, and is designed to handle up to 1 million passengers annually. It features a 2,500‑meter runway capable of accommodating wide‑body aircraft and is equipped with ILS CAT‑I, DVOR/DME, and modern airfield lighting systems for improved safety and efficiency. Although domestic operations are active, international flights have not yet commenced as of 2026 due to certification, safety‑category, and regulatory challenges, as well as broader geopolitical and financial issues surrounding the project. Despite these setbacks, PKR remains a strategically important airport intended to boost tourism and regional connectivity in western Nepal.
