Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA)—officially IATA: KTM, ICAO: VNKT—is Nepal’s primary international gateway, located in the eastern part of the Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of 4,390 ft (1,338 m). Opened in 1949, it features a single 3,350‑meter asphalt runway (02/20) and operates both an international and a domestic terminal, serving as the country’s busiest aviation hub. TIA connects Nepal to over 40 destinations in 17 countries and functions as a major base for carriers such as Nepal Airlines, Himalaya Airlines, and numerous domestic airlines. The airport is known for its tabletop runway, frequent congestion, and weather‑related delays, especially winter fog. In 2023, TIA handled 8.99 million passengers and 233,187 aircraft movements, underscoring its central role in Nepal’s air transport network.
