Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, spanning about 130,370 km² and bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. Its landscape is defined by volcanoes, lakes, and two coastlines—the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east—making it one of the region’s most geographically diverse nations. The capital and largest city, Managua, sits in the western lowlands, where most of the population and economic activity are concentrated. Culturally, Nicaragua is shaped by a blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro‑Caribbean influences, with Spanish as the official language and mestizos forming the majority of the population. Historically, the country experienced long periods of authoritarian rule, most notably under the Somoza dynasty, followed by the Sandinista Revolution in 1979, which remains a defining chapter in its modern political identity.
