Kavala International Airport “Alexander the Great” (IATA: KVA) is a regional airport located near Chrysoupoli in the municipality of Nestos, serving the city of Kavala and the wider region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The airport operates a 3,000‑meter asphalt runway (05/23) and sits at an elevation of 18 ft (5 m), enabling it to handle both domestic and international traffic. Originally opened in 1981 as a replacement for Kavala’s older airfield, it was renamed in 1992 to honor Alexander the Great. Today, the airport is managed by the Fraport AG / Copelouzos Group joint venture under a 40‑year concession agreement signed in 2015. In 2022, KVA handled 251,615 passengers and 2,587 aircraft movements, reflecting its role as a key gateway for travelers heading to Kavala, Thasos, and nearby cities such as Xanthi and Drama.
