Alexandroupoli Airport “Dimokritos” (IATA: AXD, ICAO: LGAL) is a regional international airport located about 7 km east of Alexandroupoli in northeastern Greece, near the village of Apalos. Established in 1944 and upgraded to international status in 1955, it features a 2,582‑meter asphalt runway (07/25) capable of handling medium‑sized aircraft. The airport was named in honor of the ancient philosopher Democritus, born in nearby Abdera. Its terminal facilities were significantly expanded in 2011, covering more than 8,500 m², and it offers four aircraft parking stands. AXD is served by airlines such as Aegean Airlines and Sky Express, providing connections to Athens and seasonal destinations. The airport is accessible via the E90 and Egnatia Odos highways and supports modern navigation systems including VOR‑DME, NDB, and ILS Category I.
