Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI), located near Hambantota in Sri Lanka's deep south, is one of the country's most modern yet least used airports often described as the world's emptiest international airport. Opened in 2013 as part of a large development push in the region, HRI features a contemporary terminal, a long runway capable of handling wide body aircraft, and ample apron space designed for high traffic volumes. Despite this, the airport has struggled to attract airlines and sustained passenger demand, operating mostly with charter flights, cargo operations, training flights, and occasional regional services. Its remote location, limited local population, and competition from Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport have all contributed to low utilization. Still, HRI remains strategically significant, with ongoing efforts to expand cargo activity and explore public private partnerships aimed at revitalizing the facility.
